We4Sea launches Big Data Platform to reduce fuel consumption of ships

DELFT, November 1st, 2016 - Today, on November 1st, the Big Data Fuel Monitoring platform of We4Sea will be officially launched. As it goes with in the maritime industry, the platform will be christened using a champagne bottle by Ms. Ellen Visser, director at the Dutch Rijkswaterstaat (Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment).

On Earth Day, April 22nd, 2016, the young Dutch ship-monitoring company We4Sea announced a project to utilize big data in order to cut fuel costs and reduce ship emissions. We4Sea believes there is a huge potential to increase sustainability and lower fuel consumption in the maritime world, by using Big Data technologies. The company has now successfully used a combination of data analytics with simulation technology, with a focus to reduce ship fuel costs and related emissions The platform is now officially launched, and We4Sea invites innovative ship-owners to join this global challenge.

Michiel Katgert, CTO We4Sea: “During the last 6 months, we have built, tested and validated a platform that is capable to import ship’s data, and combine it with data from different sources, such as satellite data, waves, ocean currents and wind. Secondly, for every ship monitored, we design an energy simulation model, able to calculate fuel consumption and emissions, based on its sailing profile and weather encountered. “

Dan Veen, CEO We4Sea: ”We want to make fuel efficiency easy. We do the math, ship owners get the fuel savings. After the launch, we aim for growth. With the recent IMO decisions on CO2monitoring and lowering the sulphur cap in 2020, fuel monitoring will become a must. Starting at less than 10 euro a day, we can monitor your ship on fuel-efficiency and emissions world-wide. It is our goal to reduce CO2 emissions with 1 Million tons in 3 years“.

We4Sea now opens the platform for all ship owners, interested in making better decisions, based on detailed insights on all aspects of their operations – technical, logistical and operational – that impact their fuel efficiency. The web platform offers these crucial insights - based on big data analysis of the actual operations of their ships.

Besides ship owners, the pilot revealed that maritime Equipment Manufacturers can also benefit from data. Michiel Katgert: “Using the ship’s operational data, we can calculate potential savings of a fuel saving device. This enables data-driven Return-on-Investment decisions.”

By addressing both the economic and environmental impact in one solution, We4Sea creates a win-win situation. The application threshold is low, because the we4Sea solution does not require hardware installation on board.
